Velvet Road

Type: Private Residence, Partial Renovation
Size: 450 sf
Location: Mount Tremper, NY
Status: Completed 2020

This project involves the partial renovation of an existing single-family home nestled in the Catskill Mountains of New York.

At the rear of the house, an underutilized covered deck was transformed into a guest bedroom/office, a sunroom, and a new angled outdoor deck.

A small, angled deck was created by recessing a portion of the new exterior wall, maintaining the home’s distinctive profile while introducing a dynamic architectural element.

To preserve the character of the existing structure, the original wood columns of the covered deck were retained, with new walls and windows thoughtfully positioned between them. This constraint became a guiding design principle, allowing the infill to seamlessly integrate with the home while adding valuable interior square footage.

The sunroom and office are connected by double doors, which, when open, create a seamless, expansive space. Carefully aligned doors and windows establish sightlines that frame the surrounding landscape, enhancing the connection between indoors and outdoors.

In the office, a window was strategically placed and sized to align with the homeowner’s existing desk, offering a framed view into the woods—an intentional detail that enriches the workspace with natural beauty.

The renovation included a full update of the second-floor primary bathroom.

Exterior clear grade cedar vertical siding and pine stained ebony interior window surrounds.
